The Northern District of California, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers presiding, dismissed nearly all claims brought against the counties of San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Contra Costa by putative classes of county jail inmates and their families asserting constitutional and antitrust claims related to in-jail telephone service. Although a district court in the Central District denied a motion to dismiss virtually-identical claims, the Bay Area counties presented the Court with clear and persuasive arguments that have largely extinguished this dispute, with leave to amend granted on only one claim. Michael von Loewenfeldt and Frank Busch represent San Mateo County in the action.
